In today’s automotive industry, a variety of materials are used. In this case, particular emphasis is placed on high-tech materials such as carbon fiber. This material has a great future, being strong and light at the same time. But is it as good as they say? The researchers set out to test this and organized a full-fledged test, the participants of which were a variety of materials.
The test technology turned out to be extremely simple and indicative. Hollow cylinders of the same size were pre-prepared from PVC, brass, aluminum, titanium, two grades of steel, acrylic and, of course, carbon. The test tool was a powerful hydraulic press. It was decided to apply the maximum crushing force to each of the samples. It was assumed that each of them would be destroyed at different pressures. The experiment can hardly have the status of a scientist, but it helps to understand which materials are the strongest.
Before the test, each cylinder was weighed. The lightest samples were acrylic, PVC and carbon – 9, 11 and 11 grams, respectively. The heaviest was the stainless steel cylinder, which weighed 59 grams. Only 1 gram lighter was the tool steel part. After that, the enthusiasts proceeded to the main test.
So, an acrylic cylinder collapsed at a pressure of 1538 kg, which somewhat exceeded expectations. The PVC sample could not withstand the pressure of 1004 kg. The destruction of aluminum and titanium rings occurred at 3840 kg and 9190 kg, respectively. The highest strength was demonstrated by a sample of stainless steel – 15,800 kg. But the carbon could not exceed the milestone of 2998 kg. At the same time, the process of destruction has already begun at a pressure of 2000 kg – pieces began to break off from the cylinder.
